WILLIAM LAWRENCE 50 YEARS MINING SERVICE BY STEVEN LAWRENCE |
|
WILLIAM LAWRENCE
My Grandfather William Lawrence was the son of John and Bertha Lawrence and he worked at Silverwood for 50 years up to his death in 1964 from pneumoconiosis, he received a certificate and a Davy Lamp from the coalboard in acknowledgement of his 50 years of service. From a local newspaper obituary I have I've got the following: He was born in Staffordshire, moved to Rotherham as a child, and was employed as a "collier and packer" at the Canklow, Maltby, and Silverwood Collieries. He retired in 1959 after 50 years service as a coal-miner.
William had six sons who also worked at the mine, only one of those sons being alive today [ November 2007 ].
