| THE 1970 CONTROVERSY | |
|
The area known as dahn't backs became the subject of a controversy in the 1970's, the house's were in a great need of repair, to the extent the residents believed they should be demolished. The late Lol Foster took the photos below during this period of Thrybergh's History. The family of Lol Foster have donated them to this site, as they may actually be some of the last photo's of this small area as it was from the beginning of the 20th century. They are presented here as a visual reflection which is part of Thrybergh's History.
Many people will remember the time when Lol alongside others campaigned to the local M. P Peter Hardy about the living conditions. This occurred when Rotherham Council decided to modernize the houses darn't backs, as work commenced the area became overrun with rats, they were everywhere. The people really thought that the council were throwing good money after bad, and in their opinion the houses should have really been demolished and new homes re-built.

A view of the modernized homes beyond the rubble of an old toilet and coal place. No awards for guessing which half of the wall was the coal place. |
